HENRY LEE LUCAS CONFESSIONS
One of the largest - and cruelest - hoaxes in history
In the 1980s, hundreds of murders were "solved" by Henry Lee Lucas confessions, most of which were later debunked. Many cases were reopened. Many others need to be.
Henry Lee Lucas Confessions is a project of the Utah Cold Case Coalition. It began with an examination of three Utah murders claimed by Lucas that had not been reopened. We soon realized the problem was so much bigger.
Henry Lee Lucas was 46 years old when he began confessing in 1983 to hundreds of murders throughout the United States and Canada. In 1998, then-Gov. George W. Bush commuted Lucas's death sentence due to concerns about about his guilt. He died in prison in 2001.
We have researched Lucas and his confessions in depth - FBI records, law enforcement archives, case files, court transcripts, media reports from 1960-2019.
